Nine months ago Strelka launched its first academic year: 35 students, 15 professors, and 5 themes for research all in all meant hundreds of tasks, questions for discussion and points of view. Students and professors will present the outcomes of their joint effort in the end of this month — June 28th and 29th. During these two days each student will have a chance to make a presentation and answer questions from the audience

Farshid Moussavi is an architect and educator, and co-founder of Foreign Office Architects (FOA), director of Design research theme at Strelka. The firm has been recognized by awards including the Enric Miralles Prize for Architecture, three RIBA Worldwide Awards and a RIBA European Award, the Kanagawa Prize for Architecture, the 2004 Venice Architecture Biennale Award, Building Design’s Retail Architect of the Year Award and the Charles Jencks Award for Architecture.

While spatial masterplans for cities historically set their physical structure and form, today’s masterplanners attempt to bring about the physical, social and economic revival of urban centres or districts on a more holistic basis. Today’s masterplanners don’t prescribe a rigid blueprint, but use multidisciplinary, participatory, adaptive, retrofitting-oriented strategies to incrementally incubate new realities.
