Differentiated itself from trade fair and exposition, the Biennale is commonly understood as international, prestigious and avant-garde biannual exhibition for cultural, creative and artistic works. Many Biennales experiments and mutates in its organizational structure, curatorial model, venue, intellectual position and artistic form. A century apart from the year 1895 model of Venice Art Biennale, there has been an explosion on the number of biennales since 1990s. Amongst some 300 Biennale titles now in the world, less than a few dozen are truly progressive and progressing. This forum will examine two newcomers from Asia- the Gwangju Design Biennale, and the Hong Kong- Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale. Curators of the two Moscow Biennales shall join as commentators of the debate.
