Lecture Paola Antonelli
Different experts argue that design is no more than 150-100 years old, but it plays an important role in our lives and has gained its place among arts. The Department of Design and Architecture of MoMA in New-York, curated by Paola Antonelli, is a vivid proof of the fact. She studied in Politecnico di Milano — home for contemporary design, which gave the world such outstanding designers as Vico Magistretti, Gio Ponti, Achille Castiglione. She started her work at MoMA in 1994 and almost immediately put together several landmark exhibitions, significant for contemporary understanding of design: Mutant Materials in Contemporary Design (1995), Thresholds: Contemporary Design from the Netherlands (1996), Achille Castiglioni: Design! (1997–98). Paola Antonelli has been in charge of expanding MoMA’s design collection for almost twenty years. While she makes the most interesting objects from all over the world accessible to the public, she also profoundly influences our vision of design, its goals and aims.
