The seminar with film director and architect Liam Young, who tells how the artist’s tools turn into objects of culture

Architect and founder of think tank Tomorrow Thought Today Liam Young comes to Moscow with a unique audio visual performance In the Robot Skies – the world’s first narrative shot entirely through autonomous drones;  it explores the drone as a cultural object, not just as a new instrument of visual story telling but also as the catalyst for a new collection of urban sub cultures.

At the seminar Liam will hold an intimate talk and Q&A session to share his experience of combining various art forms and working in the spaces between design, fiction and futures. Liam will introduce the session with a discussion of a number of his recent projects.

The seminar is held in English without translation. Participants of the event will be selected in advance. Applications for participation are accepted until 12:00 May 25. To apply, please, use the registration form.

Liam Young’s work explores the possibilities of fantastic, perverse and imaginary urbanism. Together with Tomorrow Thought Today  he has consulted and conducted workshops on speculation, emerging technologies and future forecasting for firms including Phillips Technologies, BBC, the film industry and various arts and science organizations. Liam Young is a tutor of the educational program ‘The New Normal’ at Strelka Institute. Liam’s projects develop fictional speculations as critical instruments to survey the consequences of emerging environmental and technological futures. His inherently collaborative design approach means his work is diverse in its scale and nature.

His projects include ‘Under Tomorrows Skya science fiction movie set for a fictional future city: a swarm of quadcopter drones that drift through the city broadcasting a pirate internet and file sharing hub. He also runs the ‘Unknown Fields Division’, an award winning nomadic workshop that travels on annual expeditions to the ends of the earth to investigate unreal and forgotten landscapes, alien terrains and industrial ecologies.

The film In the Robot Skies accompanied by audiovisual performance will be held on May 28th at Beat Film Festival. The seminar and screening are held with the support of the British Council in the framework of the Year of Science and Education of Great Britain and Russia 2017.
