На двухдневном воркшопе содиректор постдипломной программы Института «Стрелка» Николай Бояджиев расскажет о проблемах, которые затрагивает исследовательская программа The Terraforming. Think-tank посвящен преобразованию городов, технологий и экосистем Земли для поддержания жизни на планете. 

В процессе групповой работы, участники смогут:

— узнать о спекулятивном дизайн-исследовании и ряде творческих / генеративных парадигм;

— создать прототипы сценариев и преобразовать идеи и исследования в смелые предложения;

— сделать раскадровку, сценарий, монтаж и презентацию окончательного варианта проекта. 

По итогам воркшопа каждая группа подготовит 5-минутный питчинг и/или 1-минутный видеоролик в формате ежегодных презентаций результатов работы исследовательской программы The Terraforming.

Условия участия:

• Воркшоп пройдет полностью на английском языке.

An overview of Strelka Institute Design-Research think tank’s focus and methodology

In this 2 day workshop, architect and Strelka’s postgraduate program co-director Nicolay Boyadjiev will present an overview of the themes, conceptual provocations and collaborative methodologies driving The Terraforming think tank at the Strelka Institute for Media Architecture and Design in Moscow. The Terraforming is a 3-year multidisciplinary initiative blending architecture, design-research and philosophy to investigate the future role and growing agency of cities as the planetary network by which we occupy the Earth’s surface.

The verb "to terraform" is a science fiction term usually referring to the transformation of ecosystems on other planets/moons to make them capable of supporting Earth-like life. However, the looming ecological consequences of what is called the Anthropocene now suggest that in the decades to come, we will need to terraform Earth if it is to remain a viable host for Earth-like life.

If "Terraforming" is this artificial anthropogenic construction of the environment, then "Anthropoforming" — a concept coined in response by feminist scholar Helen Hester — refers to the artificial construction of the human organism by the environment or by the species itself. Both Terraforming and Anthropoforming imply complementary but not identical conceptual insights for design. Both see the wide exterior as another interior in which and for which we can design. Both see the human as a fundamentally plastic species, not as the protagonist in a melodrama of omnipotence and mastery. And both reveal that technicity works in several directions at once. What are the broader theoretical and pragmatic implications for the mainstream environmental discourse, and for design practitioners situated within it?

During the workshop, participants will learn alternatives to mainstream design culture “optimising” for pre-determined outcomes by framing different questions, expanding the space of possibility and proposing more appropriate design interventions across more appropriate timeframes, scales and disciplines. The workshop presents an overview of the think tank’s unique design-research approach by asking how trans-disciplinary designers and other practitioners can work collaboratively at this critical juncture in order to communicate more ambitious, ambiguous and open-ended concepts to more appropriate and less conventional audiences.

About the workshop tutor:

Nicolay Boyadjiev is an architect, strategic designer and creative director working between Montreal and Moscow. He is currently the co-director of Strelka Institute’s postgraduate education program, where he co-leads “The Terraforming” interdisciplinary design-research think-tank. He is also the co-author and editor of “The New Normal” (2020, Strelka Press + Park Books): a comprehensive record of the projects and insights developed during the 2017-19 design-research cycle at Strelka, developing and prototyping new models for urban design practice at the intersection of software, cinema, strategy, and planning. Prior to joining Strelka, he has worked as an architectural designer, researcher and strategist at internationally renowned studios ranging from boutique consultancies to larger architecture firms. He is currently based in Moscow (RU).
