Sam Chermayev is a professor at the Dessau Higher School of Architecture in Germany and co-founder of the June14 architectural bureau. While working for Tokio-based architectural bureau SANAA, he participated in the preparation of such projects as London’s Serpentin summer pavilion gallery, Derek Lam’s flagship store in New York, and the Torre Nerruda business center in Mexico.

Catherine Chermayev is a lecturer at the School of Visual Arts in New York and co-founder of the i2i international photo agency. The author of Fashion Photography Now and in the past publisher of foreign books, Catherine was special projects director with the Magnum photo agency.

At the lecture, Sam and Catherine will discuss the work of the participants of the workshop «Appropriation: copying as a means of production», and reflect on how the new can be found in the old. Sam Chermayev will talk about his work at the SANAA architectural bureau and about the projects of the June14 studio that they founded, in particular «the Bridge Table» project.

Sam Chermayev: «The two best examples that confirm the theory that copying is a way of production are the artworks by Richard Prince and Thomas Demand, which remake what already exists in order to say something new. If we talk about architecture, we can think of the project «vitra house» by architectural bureau Herzog & de Meuron, although not necessarily as a positive example.»
